In 2021, National Work Zone Awareness Week enters its 21st year of raising awareness for the safety of workers and motorists on the roads. This year’s awareness week will take place April 26-30 and is hosted by the Michigan Department of Transportation. We invite you to learn more about the theme “Drive Safe. Work Safe. Save Lives” and this annual effort to raise awareness about road worker safety.
The History Behind Raising Awareness
National Work Zone Awareness Week can trace its roots back to the spring of 1997. The staff members of the Virginia Department of Transportation wanted to raise awareness before their many construction projects began in the summer of that year. From there, many other departments joined the cause, including California’s Department of Transportation. In 2000, the week became a nationally recognized event for many departments of transportation across the country; these days, a large number of state governments, corporations, and individuals participate.
Since National Work Zone Awareness Week’s beginnings in 1997, the event’s kickoff has been held in many different cities, including Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Seattle, and Sacramento. Each year, the host city comes up with their own campaign and theme that best promotes their idea of work zone safety. This year the Michigan Department of Transportation has the honor of hosting the event with their theme “Drive Safe. Work Safe. Save Lives.”
Go Orange Day
One of the most important days of National Safety Awareness week takes place on Wednesday, April 28th and is called Go Orange Day. On this day, all roadway safety workers and those involved in roadside construction are encouraged to wear orange in honor of supporting work zone safety. Wearing this color not only draws attention to the issue of safety while performing such a dangerous job, but also serves as a way to honor victims that have lost their lives in work zones.
G3 and Safety
At G3 Quality, the safety of our workers as well as those traveling on the roads is our top priority. Work zone safety is often forgotten by workers and road travelers alike, and unfortunately this is how accidents happen. We place great importance on not only following the safest procedures, but also wearing the appropriate safety equipment while doing any job. As members of G3, we hope you are always staying safe and alert when on the roads!
