San Bernardino County Transportation Authority Interstate 10 Express Lanes Corridor Contract 1
With the expected growth within San Bernardino of over half a million additional people and a quarter million jobs over the next 25 years, the I-10 Express Lanes project is amongst the highest priority. All 33 miles of the I-10 Express Lanes were environmentally cleared in 2017. Phase 1 or Contract 1 of I-10 Express Lanes is located in the southwestern portion of San Bernardino County east of Los Angeles County. The project will widen the existing I-10 freeway between the Los Angeles/San Bernardino County line and I-15, a distance of approximately 10 miles. The project includes two tolled express lanes in each direction. In addition, lanes to assist drivers in getting on and off the freeway (auxiliary lanes) will be constructed in selected locations. West of Haven Avenue, a single new lane will be constructed and combined with the existing HOV lane to provide two express lanes in each direction. Two express lanes will also be constructed east of Haven Avenue.
G3 Quality is an integral part of the Design-Build Quality Management Team providing quality validation materials control, inspection, and testing. Our services include implementing and maintaining the project quality manual, materials control schedules, and inspecting and testing all elements of the work including materials validation for soil, aggregates, concrete, hot mix asphalt and steel. Major features of the project include 20 bridge structures with six overcrossing replacements, two undercrossing replacements, seven undercrossing widenings, and five bridge widenings over channels. The project adds approximately 80 retaining walls of various types, including sub-horizontal ground anchor walls, soldier pile walls, soil nail walls, standard walls, and sound wall barriers. Major pavement construction along the entire project consists of jointed plain concrete pavement and hot mix asphalt along 80 on and off ramps and surface streets.
Among our innovations for the project include on-site laboratory testing capabilities as well as the implementation of our integrated real-time reporting software, Quality Connect™. Utilizing this software allows the quality team to effectively plan, schedule, inspect, and act in a real-time collaborative manner. On a project of this magnitude, our approach of implementing Quality Connect has provided overall time savings by the Quality Management team of over an estimated 58,000 hours; that is a substantial project efficiency contributing to the JV’s goal of minimal rework.
