PROJECT SCOPE
The overall Middle Harbor Terminal Redevelopment Project at Pier E consists of three phases of construction with a total cost of nearly $1.5 billion. The third and final phase of the project will develop the final 112 acres. The Port of Long Beach describes the Middle Harbor Terminal Development Project as creating the world’s greenest container shipping terminal, a distinction that furthers our pride of service here.
OUR ROLE
As an integral part of the Quality Management Team, G3 Quality provides quality materials control, inspection, and testing. Our services included asphalt pavement materials consulting for the X and Y mixes, developing the Job Mix Formulas, and implementing a rigorous quality control program. For this task, G3 Quality partnered with the contractor and the Port of Long Beach to evaluate a high-performance hot mix asphalt (HMA) design to mitigate premature failures occurring at locations within the POLB Middle Harbor. A major effort was undertaken to design the asphalt mix to meet the high-performance specifications and requirements of the Port while placing, inspecting, and testing for compliance on a daily basis. G3 verified materials, performed placement inspection, plant inspection, and generated quality reports daily after each shift, including statistical pay factor information.
OUR ADDED VALUE
Through this endeavor, G3 worked with leaders at the Port Long Beach on a daily basis through conference calls, weekend meetings, and site evaluations. Our contributing value to this project also included our local Port of Long Beach experience, ASTM standards and FAA specifications experience, and demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex construction schedules at this busy port terminal – all with the goal to ensure quality materials and practices are implemented to successful completion on this marquee project.
