Mentone Pipeline Extension Phase II

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District (SBVMWD) imports water into its service area through participation in the California State Water Project (SWP) and manages groundwater storage within its boundaries.  In an effort to increase supply to growing community needs in the area, SBVMWD developed, among other projects, the Phase II of the East Branch Extension (EBX). The project connects the SBVMWD Foothill Pipeline near the intersection of Cone Camp and Greenspot Roads with the Crafton Hill Pump Station located near Mill Creek Road.

PROJECT SCOPE

The overall EBX – Phase II includes constructing approximately six miles of 72 or 78-inch diameter pipeline, construction of a reservoir providing 560 acre-feet of storage, construction of a 200 cubic feet per second (cfs) pump station, installation of a new pump at the Cherry Valley Pump Station to increase the capacity from 32 cfs to 56 cfs, and expansion of the Crafton Hill Pump Station from 60 cfs to 135 cfs.

OUR ROLE

G3 is responsible for ensuring that backfilling and compaction of earthwork fills, together with placement of structural concrete, meet project specifications. We also ensure project materials are compliant through laboratory soils testing for physical characteristics and compressive strength testing of concrete cylinder specimens. Additionally, serving in our role as quality control specialists, we perform inspection services identifying and pre-qualifying materials at the site and the source, such as import borrow materials, prior to incorporation into the project.

OUR ADDED VALUE

Our contributing value to this project includes our local area experience with similar in-situ conditions, and ASTM standards experience specifically related to large pipeline projects like this, all with the goal to ensure quality materials and practices are implemented to successful completion on this important water delivery project. An onsite laboratory was also provided to deliver daily real-time test results for various material tests.
