PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Interstate 5 / Empire Interchange Improvement Project is a series of enhancements to the Interstate 5 Freeway, including a new interchange at Empire Avenue in the city of Burbank. This project, led by Caltrans and in collaboration with LACMTA, will relieve congestion along I-5 while providing important new access to the Golden State area of Burbank, including the Empire Center and Bob Hope Airport.

PROJECT SCOPE

The project includes a full freeway interchange at Empire Avenue, new freeway and railroad crossing allowing access to Empire Center, freeway widening including two carpool lanes and weaving lanes, Burbank Boulevard interchange demolition and reconstruction, railroad grade separation at Buena Vista Street, and realignment/closure of San Fernando Boulevard near Lincoln Street.

OUR ROLE

G3 Quality has been delivering quality control inspection, sampling, and testing services on the project since construction began in 2014. Our scope covers quality control management for lean concrete base rapid setting, HMA, data coring, JPCP, JPCP-RSC, structural concrete, masonry sound walls, MSE walls, and structural steel testing of welded or mechanically spliced hoops. Major features of the project include construction of over 2 miles of HOV lanes and elevated railroad tracks near Empire Avenue and at Buena Vista Street and San Fernando Boulevard, requiring extensive coordination with the BNSF and Metrolink.
