Alameda Corridor East (ACE) Fullerton Road Grade Separation Project

PROJECT BACKGROUND

In an effort to decrease idling automobiles stopped at the existing Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) grade crossing and to improve overall regional air quality, the purpose of the project is to eliminate the existing at-grade crossing through construction of a combination of railroad flyover and roadway underpass.

PROJECT SCOPE

The Fullerton Road Grade Separation Project is located in the City of Industry crossing the UPRR Los Angeles Subdivision and Metrolink (Riverside Line) at UPRR Milepost (MP) 21.43. Major components of this project consist of a railroad street overcrossing and pedestrian bridge south of the new railroad bridge, with retaining walls, depressed roadway, and multiple utility relocations.

OUR ROLE

G3 is providing Quality Assurance testing and inspection services on this $159.5 million project, the largest of ACE’s Phase II grade separations. We are delivering project management services, field inspection and testing, as well as laboratory testing. Quality Assurance testing and inspection services are performed for Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP), Rapid Setting Concrete (RSC), structural concrete, earthwork, and slurry. Consisting of 19 phases of construction, major features of the project include more than 14,000 feet of railroad track construction, 10,000 feet of retaining wall construction, three bridge structures (UPRR, roadway, and pedestrian) as well as extensive, deep (20-35 feet) sewer and storm drain construction with dewatering measures.

OUR ADDED VALUE

ACE faced a construction challenge when portions of the new pavement showed signs of distress. G3’s Project Manager, Jordan Roper, PE, and our Caltrans-certified field technician EJ Both, quickly mobilized and tested on-site as well as provided laboratory testing. Results were turned around quickly in a clear and concise report for ACE to implement an informed solution to timely resolve the issue. Other contributing values to this client include our ability to quickly respond to a complex work schedule, including night and weekend shifts. Our expertise, rapid responsiveness, and services flexibility are key to our value and successful partnership on this large rail grade separation program.
