Health and Safety on the Job Site During Summer 2020

With temperatures rising and the continued discussions regarding how long we should be mindful of the spreading of COVID-19, there is a lot to consider when it comes to health and safety in the workplace. This is especially so for those in the construction and civil engineering industry. As we approach these hot summer months, it is important that your team members come to the job site prepared each day in order to stay safe.

Stay Hydrated

June gloom already seems to be a thing of the past for 2020, as temperatures across Southern California have surpassed the 90s the first ten days of the month. With this in mind, the next few months could bring adverse conditions for those working outside. Be sure to always keep water nearby to stay hydrated throughout the day. If you’re out on the job site and feel symptoms of dizziness, rapid heart rate, confusion, or light-headedness, you may be dehydrated. This is common for those who work outdoors in excessive heat and could become a medical emergency.

Get Your Rest

As exciting as it may seem to finally visit the restaurants and other businesses that are reopening in the State of California, sometimes we need to slow down and take care of ourselves first. If you are feeling ill, abnormally tired, or showing symptoms of dehydration after a long day out in the sun, it may be in your best interest to take the night off and recharge at home.

Slow the Spread

It’s also important that you continue to follow industry and CDC guidelines when it comes to COVID-19 protocols on the job site until instructed otherwise. This includes:

  • Staying home if you have symptoms
  • Limiting close contact with others by maintaining social distancing
  • Wearing cloth face coverings
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces such as tools, machines, vehicles, handrails, ladders, etc.
  • Limiting tool sharing when possible
  • Practicing proper hand hygiene
